Aram Shelton is an up-and-coming leader in the field of new music. His playing and compositions are thoughtful, confident and concise, surveying a wide swath of approaches and moods. ugEX freaks might recognize his name and frantic performance on the last cut of the the 2006 Weasel Walter "Revolt Music" release, but Aram showcases a lot of depth on this release: momentous, lyrical group improvisations emerge from Shelton's knotty, melody-laden structures and the interplay is consistently rapid-paced: very sensitive, but always forging ahead with vigor. If you're a fan of intelligent free jazz along the lines of Anthony Braxton, Ken Vandermark and Tim Berne, you'll find a lot to enjoy here on this well recorded and packaged release.
