rare sealed copies of this killer 1978 debut featuring bassist Roberto Miranda, Alex Cline (Nels' brother) on drums and legendary West Coast clarinet innovator John Carter in addition to Vinny Golia on tenor and baritone saxophones, piccolo, flutes, bass and alto recorders, percussion and sho. This one comes roaring out of the gate with the Ornettish fast freebop of "Anger" before shifting into the pensive sound explorations of "The Human Beings". Side two opens with the tightly wound, hectic clarinet and piccolo curlicues of "Sequence" before moving into the opening high-speed drums/baritone sax intro of "Sky King" - a kickass collective blow-out. The record comes to a close with a gentle Carter clarinet solo which builds into a group statement of haunting, dissonant loneliness. A fine statement of solid free jazz from the late '70s West Coast scene!

Openhearted LP - currently out of stock
1979 release of awesome free jazz featuring Vinny on clarinets, saxophones and flutes with trumpet badass Baikida Carroll (you might recognize his name from crucial Human Arts Ensemble and Julius Hemphill sides ), Miranda, Alex Cline and the first (I think) recording of a teenaged Nels Cline on guitar! Side one begins with the ghostly drone called "Alone", Carroll's trumpet and Golia's soprano sax deftly weaving complex harmony lines around each other before the floodgates open and the group rips into a frenzy. "#14" is a fast moving melody statement which leads into a light, but frantic group improvisation that might remind some of SME. The A side ends swinging with a complex Braxton-like head before closing with some powerful, free-blowing. Side B opens with the gnarly, convoluted "Pulse", featuring some killer baritone sax and scrap metal banging! The next cut, "The Presence", has a sonically transparent mid-'70s Braxton vibe, mixing composition and abstract improvisation. This nice record closes with the mid-tempo free-bop of "Dance for O.C." .

More than 90 minutes of sound exploration on this 1979 double gatefold lp featuring the stripped down trio of Golia, Miranda and Alex Cline live in concert. This clear, bright recording features a well-paced set of music and moods building up to some truly firebreathing soprano saxophone gymnastics on the third side and some really out, Ayler-esque baritone honking on side four. Armed with a gaggle of woodwinds, Vinny really stretches out here, communicating freely with his erstwhile rhythm section. (Nine Winds 0103)

MV 005 - Transvalue Book II (Teapot in a Tempest):
ok. this is a weird one released in '88 on Thankyou Records, heavy on spoken text and feat. Vinny Golia, noted trombonist Michael Vlatkovich and a shitload of vocalists and instrumentalists. Think "Giorno Poetry Systems", Michael Mantler and the concept of big band free jazz/prog, then you have some vague idea of this cheesy '80s insanity!
