Expect very few updates between now and November 15, 1998. Our staff will be in Europe with Bobby Conn. Some stuff is definitely going on right now. U.S. Maple, Quintron, Cheer-Accident, Lozenge, Zeek Sheck, Adam and the Antz, and others have Chicago gigs coming up, but you can go look in the fucking Reader to get that information.

The Bobby Conn East Coast tour 1998 went off like a roman candle.

The Lake Of Dracula 7" on Kill Rock Stars is finally out. It features two songs ("4 Teachers" and "Violators") recorded on last year's West Coast tour featuring Jessica(ex-Jaks) on bass! Order it from ugEXPLODE when their staff returns from vacation on November 15! O.K. Here's the deal: Don't hold your breath for a reappearence by LOD. Tons of begging and pleading requests for live dates and new records are encouraging, but the band simply does not exist any more! Heather is persuing higher education and will be unavailable to rock. Her minimal, fastidious drumming was the absolute core of the music. She cannot be replaced (believe me, many have attempted and failed.) The only way this band will ever play again will be at the moment Marlon, Weasel, Heather, and possibly, "The Manhattanite" and Jessica are willing and able to!

Check out the faboo new SKiN GRAFT mail order catalog on-line! The label will be releasing new works by Quintron, Flossie and the Unicorns, Collossomite, and You Fantastic! this winter. OOOOOOPs!!!! I guess that rumor that the label is dead just petered out.

The first Adam and the Antz 7" will be released on Decca Records in November! It will be available through ugEXPLODE.

A new Flying Luttenbachers lp is in the works. The tentative title is "...the truth...is a fucking lie." and will feature tracks by all of the 1998 incarnations of the band.

Cripes! What a month. Chicago gigs are coming up by U.S.Maple, Melt-Banana, Zeek Sheck and the rest of the cast of regulars, of course. Two particularly interesting events will take place during the beginning of October at Robie's on Division and Damen Avenue. All I know right now is that the legendary 1800's music troupe Caroliner will headline one show with what is rumored to be a new band featuring Lake Of Dracula vocalist Marlon Magas. Don't ask me for any more info - call the fucking bar yourself!

Last Tuesday Bobby Conn led a massive ensemble-plus-dancers (!) in a jaunt through the contents of his new album at the Hot House. Although the sound quality suffered due to lack of soundcheck and proper p.a. gear, a good time was had by all. At half time, the Napoleonic Anti-Christ himself donned a cape and daiper to wail "Babymen", a ditty about parasitic rock musician losers.

Adam and the Ants will play at the Legacy in Chicago on Sept. 5, 1998. Once again, you'll have to crack open the old phone book to get the info because I'm too tired to dig it up right now. Opening slots will be filled by a T-Rex tribute band and the fabulous Whittaker. Expect an Ants debut 7" on Decca Records in October.

Hatewave whipped out yet another confounding set of hyper- ballistic technical death metal at the Fireside on Thursday. Their lp is still in the works. It seems the boys haven't quite found the disturbing cover art they are looking for.

Nandor Nevai, the genius behind such obscurities as The Restaurants, Vagiant, Hott Lixx, Aborted Christ Chylde, and mmm-you-sick!? Records recently tied the proverbial knot with the lovely and powerful Sissel in Oakland, California. The reception featured mind-blowing solo performances from members of Hatewave, Hott Lixx, Monotrona, Chinese Johnny and Vanilla.

Zeek Sheck is in the midst of a mini-tour this second. I don't know the hell where.

Hatewave will terrorize audiences on Thursday, August 27 at the Fireside Bowl opening for the legendary ultra-grinders Drop Dead.

Adam and the Ants and Cheer-Accident will rock the stage at the Fireside Bowl on Friday, August 21, 1998.

Bobby Conn will perform the contents of his freshly released new Thrill Jockey/Truckstop/Atavistic album "Rise Up" at the reincarnated Hot House on Tuesday, August 25. The orchestra for this concert will consist of Weasel Walter (Flying Luttenbachers, etc.), Dylan Posa (Ants, Cheer-Accident, etc), Jim O'Rourke, Thymme Jones (You Fantastic!, etc.), Coldman, Teria Gartelos, Sarah Allen, Lise Gilly, Jerry Ruthrauff and Monica BouBou.

We here at ugEX have decided to start working on a book about the 1977-1982 NYC No Wave. It's about time somebody took a really in-depth look at this astounding outburst of creativity. Details soon

Speaking of No Wave Red Aunts opened their mindblowingly good Empty Bottle show last night with the only good cover of Teenage Jesus and the Jerks' "Orphans" I've ever heard. It's a small world! This L.A. combo rocked very fucking hard. They will be missed by our staff, at the very least

On Sunday, ex-Trenchmouth wise-guy Fred Armisen hosted a legendary evening of karaoke from hell at Lounge AX in Chicago. It really was a four-hour "who's who of who-gives-a-shit" (as we say in Chicago). Here's some highlights:

Weasel Walter opening the flood gates with a sickeningly overbearing foghorn version of Meatloaf's nine-minute epic "Paradise By the Dashboard Light."

ex-Veruca Salt singer Nina Gordon belted out a ridiculously pleasing and skillful version of the Whitney Houston chestnut "The Greatest Love of All".

uber-indie rocker Steve Albini was coerced into a very, er, subdued "You Are So Beautiful To Me".

Avant-maestro Jim O'Rourke traded fours with Weasel Walter on "Total Eclipse of the Heart" before stepping into the solo spotlight with Kansas' ominous salute to the pointlessness of existence, "Dust in the Wind."

Hopefully this event will indeed repeat itself on the first Sunday of every month!

This Thursday night the motherfucking Red Aunts play at the Empty Bottle on their final tour. Hopefully we can expect much more from the various members in the future. Rumor has it that guitarist Kerry Davis and drummer Lesley Ishino are planning on forming a new combo. We here at the office consider Red Aunts to be one of the last true punk rock bands in the universe.

Adam and the Antz, featuring recently added guitarist Matthew Ashman (who looks startlingly like ex-Trenchmouth member Chris De Zutter) wailed on a very jaded bunch of partygoers at Jeff Day's house on Friday night. Providence's pride of chaos Arab On Radar followed with a torrid, insane set that kicked every ass in the room straight to bruiseville. All five members beat the living shit out of their instruments and flung theirselves around the room in a fury. The band just completed recording a nine-song album with Weasel Walter in the "John Cale" seat. This soon-to-be released slab will finally properly reveal the entropic majesty of AOR to the slumbering masses.

Chicago gigs for Bobby Conn, The Chicago Sound, Hatewave and others are coming up this month. Stay tuned.

Bobby Conn will be touring the East Coast in September before departing for a 5-week European tour in October.
